Sevilla 2-0 Real Betis: Lopetegui's men claim bragging rights in Seville Derby

Sevilla consolidated third-spot on the Spanish LaLiga standings with a 2-0 win over Real Betis on Thursday night in what was the league's first match after three months owing to the coronavirus pandemic.

Both teams made nervous starts as they put their goalkeepers under immense pressure with stray back-passes and they could be forgiven having been out for three months with no competitive football.

They however settled and the first real chance fell to the hosts on the 11th minute as Lucas Ocampos showed off amazing technique to beat his man and got a chance to pull the trigger, but sent the ball onto the crossbar.

The hosts then took control of the match and kept knocking on Betis' door even though clear-cut chances were far between.

Sevilla should have taken the lead on the 27th minute but Luuk de Jong's header from the center of the box following a Munir El Haddadi cross went agonizingly close and the ball went wide of the right post.

The hosts, despite enjoying immense possession in the opening half could not make it count, as the sides went into the break with the match still scoreless.

Julen Lopetegui's men picked the second half from where they left the first and forced Betis into countless mistakes.

The pressure paid off in the 56th minute as they won a penalty after Bartra was penalized for bundling into the back of De Jong in the area.

Lucas Ocampo stepped up and coolly slotted it in, his fifth goal in the last five matches.

It was 2-0 five minutes later as Ocampos turned provider, neatly flicking a corner ball for Fernando to easily nod it past the keeper.

There were no more goals as Sevilla celebrated a huge win that could have an impact at the top as the league returns.

The win made sure they opened a four-point gap between them and Real Sociedad in fourth, who will play Osasuna on Sunday.
