Barcelona held by Sevilla as Villareal topples Mallorca

FC Barcelona fight to extend their lead at the top of the Laliga log was thwarted on Friday night as they were held by Sevilla to a goalless draw.

Barca had arrived into the game two points above archrivals Real Madrid and the draw gives Madrid the upper hand in the Laliga title race as they have now played a game less than their opponents.

In the game, Barcelona had the lion’s share of the proceedings but couldn’t just find a way past a resolute hosts defence who depended on counter attacks for most of the games.

Real will hope that they can capitalize on the slip by Barca when they on Sociedad on Sunday with Barcelona’s next game coming on 23rd against Bilbao.

In other games of the day, Villareal escaped unscathed with a 1-0 win over Granda CF; the all-important goal scored by Moreno from the penalty spot.

The win sees Villareal maintain their seventh spot on the Laliga log with 47 points, the same number of points as Real Sociedad and Getafe who are all chasing Champions League qualification.

Oscar left it late for Leganes as they held hosts Mallorca to a 1-1 draw on Friday night too.

Hosts Mallorca had taken a ninth-minute lead through Salva Sevilla but Oscar ensured there was a share of spoils when he was to find the back of the next three minutes from full time.
