Newcastle manager Steve Bruce is interested in signing Schalke defender Weston McKennie, British media reports.
Bruce has already signed free agent Jeff Hendrick but he is targeting McKennie to reinforce his squad ahead of next season.
The USA international is rated at £20million, which would represent a substantial amount of Newcastle’s summer budget.
However, he is aware that the club is financially struggling after the much anticipated Saudi-takeover didn't materialize which means the club is stuck with Mike Ashley as their owner.
Newcastle face competition from Southampton and Monaco for McKennie signature. Schalke are facing financial difficulties and could be willing to sell the player at the right price.
