🇧🇪 Eden Hazard shows his class with first LaLiga goal
5 October 2019
Fede Valverde’s tenacity and athleticism opened up the chance but Eden Hazard’s awareness and technical ability were key as the Belgian scored his first goal for Real Madrid in a 4-2 victory over Granada at the Santiago Bernabeu on 5 October 2019. The well-placed lob over visiting goalkeeper Rui Silva was Hazard’s first goal in LaLiga following his big-money arrival from Chelsea the previous summer, and the Madrid faithful were excited both for their new galactico and for themselves. “We hope it is the first of many,” said his coach Zinedine Zidane afterwards.
Injuries and form issues have so far stopped that from happening, although the Belgium international did make a useful contribution with assists against Eibar and Valencia as Zidane’s side clinched the 2019/20 LaLiga Santander title. Madrid fans will be hoping he can hit the ground running now in the new campaign and soon find the net again.
🐐 Ronaldo Nazario marks his Madrid debut with a brace
6 October 2002
The Santiago Bernabeu rose to its feet in the 67th minute of Real Madrid’s game at home to D. Alaves on 6 October 2002, as new galactico forward Ronaldo Nazario ran on for his Real Madrid debut. The World Cup winner with Brazil earlier that summer had signed for Los Bancos late in the transfer window and needed a few weeks to return to fitness following a knee problem. Those watching had barely taken their seats before they were back out of them again, as Ronaldo scored with his first intervention in the play, just 62 seconds after coming on, chesting down fellow countryman Roberto Carlos’ cross and finishing smartly. Ronaldo added a second late on, converting from a Steve McManaman assist to seal a 5-2 victory over the Basque side.
The one-time Barcelona forward went on to win two LaLiga titles with Real Madrid and hit 83 LaLiga goals in five seasons in a white shirt. He is currently president of Real Madrid’s LaLiga Santander rivals Real Valladolid.
🧙🏻♂️ Deco’s final LaLiga goal does not end his contribution at Barça
7 October 2007
Barcelona took the lead early in their LaLiga clash with Atletico de Madrid at the Camp Nou on 7 October 2007. Barca’s Portuguese midfielder Deco reacted quickest to fire home after Atleti goalkeeper Christian Abiatti spilt a cross from a teenage winger by the name of Lionel Messi who was just starting to make a name for himself. Messi later added a second, from a Ronaldinho assist, with Xavi Hernandez wrapping up a 3-0 victory late on. That day Deco was the senior figure in a Barça midfield which also included Andres Iniesta, who was still establishing himself in the first team. That season saw the Portuguese international win a third LaLiga title, before moving on the following summer to Chelsea.
His goal against Atletico was to be the last of 11 scored, along with 35 assists, during his total of 113 LaLiga games during his four seasons at the Camp Nou. His influence on his younger teammates meant his contribution to the cause continued long past his departure.
