PSG edge out Marseille to clinch French Super Cup title for eighth successive season

Paris Saint-Germain retained their French Super Cup with a hard-fought 2-1 win over Marseille on Wednesday night.

Mauricio Icardi's goal in the 39th minute seemed enough to clinch the title, but there were two late goals from Neymar and Dimitri Payet to give it a colourful score.

The first real chance of the game fell to Icardi in the 18th minute after he made a terrific run to got on the end of a free-kick and powered a header but the ball went inches off the left post.

Four minutes later, the striker put the ball in the back of the net, but his effort was ruled out for offside.

Kylian Mbappe then thought he had scored in the 32nd minute, but just like Icardi, his goal was ruled out for offside after a VAR review.

They however got their goal in the 39th minute as Icardi found himself in the right place to bury a rebound into the back of the net for the lead.

Icardi then got another chance to score after he was put through on goal, but could not find the net as his effort went off the crossbar.

The second half was a quiet affair from both sides, and not even the introduction of Neymar just after the hour mark in place of Angel di Maria changed much.

PSG though got the chance to kill off the game with five minutes to go after the ever-lively Icardi was brought down inside the penalty area, and the referee, who at first waved away, consulted the VAR before giving the penalty.

Neymar then stepped up to easily beat Yohann Pele in goal and ensure there was no nervy ending to the match.

Dimitri Payet managed to pull one back in the 90th minute following a wonderful team effort.

This was Paris Saint-Germain's 10th Coupe de la Ligue BKT title, which means that the capital club - who won the inaugural edition back in 1995 - have won over a third of the 26 titles in the competition's history.
