Argentine legend Javier Mascherano made more than 300 appearances for Barcelona and he's now the latest inductee into LaLiga Santander's Ambassadors project.
The Ambassadors project brings together household names from yesteryear in LaLiga to raise the Spanish top-flight's visibility around the globe.
36-year-old Mascherano is a name held dear to the hearts of anyone connected with FC Barcelona. Converted from a cultured yet combative holding midfielder, he became a lynchpin in the heart of Barça's defence for over half a decade.
He certainly wasn't afraid to put his head where it hurts if it helped his team's cause.
🥇 Mascherano's Barça honours
- 🏟 334 appearances
- 🇪🇺 2x UEFA Champions League
- 🌍 3x FIFA Club World Cup
- 🏆 1x UEFA Super Cup
- 🇪🇸 5x LaLiga
- 🇪🇸 5x Copa Del Rey
- 🇪🇸 3x Spanish Super Cup
We were fortunate enough to be invited to remotely participate in Mascherano's unveiling by LaLiga as their latest ambassador.
We asked Javier his thoughts on the young talent coming through at his old club Barca; he was enthusiastic about their talent and application:
"Pedri, Trincão and Ansu Fati are all guys that are very promising. It's not easy to play at this level when you are 18 or 19 years old, especially if you're a regular in the first-team at a club like Barcelona.
"Pedri and Ansu, before he got injured, have both been performing at the highest level in the Champions League too. These players are extremely promising from what I have heard from Leo and his Barça teammates. They are young but they are ambitious, they want to grow and they want to get better. I hope they do extremely well in their careers."
Barcelona travels to Sevilla's Ramon Sanchez-Pizjuan stadium for arguably the outstanding fixture of the upcoming LaLiga weekend this Saturday. Although Ansu is sidelined by injury, we should be able to catch a glimpse of Pedri, Trincão and others.
