Chelsea 0-1 Porto: Blues makes it to the semis despite Tuesday loss

Chelsea FC made it to the semi final of the Champions League on a 2-1 aggregate score despite going down 0-1 to FC Porto on Tuesday night.

Porto had no option but to score goals if they harbored any ambitions of getting into the next round and it was no surprise when they started well with Moussa Marega being the first to test the Chelsea goalie Mendy from a tight angle.

As Porto continued to prod, right-back Wilson Manafa slanged a cross to the far post, where Otavio and Uribe tried to link up but the ball rolled wide. Porto looked more threatening than Chelsea in the early stages without creating any particularly good chances but minutes after the half-hour mark, they had their real first sniff at goal.

Jesus Corona managed to give Ben Chilwell the slip, spinning the defender to get on a pass from deep. His first touch was good and he attempted to blast the ball past Benjamin Mendy from 10 yards or so but ballooned it over the bar. He had more time than he realized to pick his spot and should have scored in what might have separated the scores in the first half.

On resumption, Porto upped the tempo with the visitors earning two corners in quick succession; Oliveira trying to pick out Pepe at the near post with the second one but Antonio Rudiger cleared with a header. There was a period when Chelsea had the game when Wilson Manafa was forced to get across to put in a stout block on Mason Mount as the midfielder bore down on goal from the inside left and pulled the trigger.

On the touchline, Porto manager Sergio Conceicao got booked, presumably for dissent with the visitors bringing on striker Mehdi Taremi for Marko Grujic; the substitute first effort being a header that forced Mendy into a save.

When Chelsea brought their first change in the 86th minute with Ziyech replacing Mount, qualification seemed to have been confirmed despite Porto scoring late on through Tahremi.
