🦅 Mohawk, tattoos, goals, glasses & assists: Napoli icon Marek Hamšík had it all

Bespectacled, tattooed and mohawked midfield magician Marek Hamšík was the darling of Napoli's fanbase for more than ten years.

Now plying his trade in Sweden with IFK Göteborg, Hamšík still skippers his country and boasts an enviable record throughout his storied career in Europe. Looking broadly at his journey and achievements, it's beyond question that he's a legend for club and country.

🥽 Playing style

Hamšík was a destructive box-to-box midfielder who also possessed silky technical skill and an eye for goal; a maker and scorer of beautiful goals in a Napoli jersey. His versatility and tactical intelligence, as well as his remarkable leadership skills, made him the cornerstone of midfield and attacking units under tacticians Edoardo Reja, Roberto Donadoni, Walter Mazzarri, Rafael Benítez and Maurizio Sarri.

🔵⚪️ Napoli legacy

For three years, Hamšík was the club's all-time leading scorer until he was eclipsed by Dries Mertens in 2020. Hamšík's attacking combinations with Edinson Cavani and Ezequiel Lavezzi in the 2010-11 and 2011-12 campaigns were the driving force behind Napoli's emergence as a Champions League club under Walter Mazzarri.

No player has made more appearances than Hamšík's 520 for the Gli Azurri. In that time, Hamšík scored 121 goals and assisted 100 more for a club he proudly captained from 2014 until his departure to the Chinese Super League in 2019.

Hamsik collected two Coppa Italia titles as well as a Supercoppa Italiana winner's medal with the Naples club, and he also reached the Europa League semifinal with them in 2015. 2012-13 was his most sparkling campaign on an individual level; he weighed in with 11 goals & 17 assists in Serie A alone as Napoli finished 2nd behind champions Juventus.

🇸🇰 International career

127 caps and 26 goals make Hamšík his nation's most prolific goal-scorer in history, and also their all-time record holder for appearances made.

Hamšík captained the Slovaks at World Cup 2010, their first-ever appearance at the showpiece tournament, helping them to the round of 16 after an impressive win over Italy in the final group stage match.

He steered the Slovak ship yet again at EURO 2016, also the landlocked nation's first appearance at a European Championships tournament.
