🏆 EURO 2020: Locatelli stars as Italy beat Switzerland to storm the Round of 16

Italy became the first team to book a place in the knockout phase of the ongoing EURO 2020 tournament.

A Manuel Locatelli brace and a Ciro Immobile strike gave them a 3-0 win on Wednesday night, their second successive victory having beaten Turkey by similar scoreline in the opening match.

The match got off to a comfortable, slow start from both sides, and unsurprisingly, it was Italy who got sight of their opponents' goal first in the 10th minute when Ciro Immobile got to the end of a Leonardo Spinazzola cross but his header went over.

The Azzurri stamped their authority with Lorenzo Insigne, in particular, troubling the Switzerland defense minute after minute.

One such chance saw the Italians put the ball in the back of the net in the 19th minute after Chiellini chested Insigne's inswinger and beat the goalie, but after a VAR check, the goal was canceled for a handball in the build-up.

It did not take long though to have their goal, and it came just before the half-hour mark after some fluid football originating from the wing.

Locatelli started the move with a superb ball to Domenico Berardi, before sprinting to meet the return ball and hammer it past a hapless Sommer.

The second half belonged to Italy from start to finish, showing their superiority against a surprisingly quiet Switzerland.

They doubled their lead seven minutes into the second period when Locatelli found a loose ball from the edge of the box and unleashed a left-footer into the bottom corner.

Switzerland had a few chances late on in the game, but could not trouble the imperious men in Blue who had time to add a third deep in injury time when Immobile unleashed a long-range shot into the bottom corner.

Their last match is against Wales, who beat Turkey 2-0 in the earlier match.
