💫 Achraf Hakimi: The story so far

💫 Achraf Hakimi: The story so far

You'd be forgiven for thinking that Achraf Hakimi is older than 22.

The outstanding Moroccon fullback has already experienced life in three of Europe's top five leagues, and that number will become four when the 2021-22 club season commences.

Hakimi completed a €60m move to PSG last month from Inter meaning that total transfer fees shelled out for him already exceed  €100m.

📚 The story so far

Hakimi made his Real Madrid debut as an 18-year-old in the 2017-18 LaLiga season. He was deemed surplus to requirements at the Bernabéu and joined Borussia Dortmund on loan for the 2018-19 and 2019-20 seasons, where he won a German Super Cup title and contributed 12 goals & 17 assists in 73 appearances.

In what now in retrospect seems like a strange business decision, Real Madrid opted to cash in on the Moroccan after his Dortmund loan spell came to an end. He has a Champions League winner's medal in 2018 on his CV even though he wasn't part of the matchday 18 against Liverpool in Kyiv. He's also got UEFA Super Cup and FIFA Club World Cups on his Real Madrid resúmé.

A €41m offer from Inter was enough to convince Los Blancos to part ways with a player who was clearly getting better and better.

🏹 Playing style

Achraf Hakimi is not a conventional right-back by any stretch of the imagination. Most teams might be able to compensate for the loss of a player in that position, but for Inter, Hakimi is pretty much irreplaceable. He's both a creative and destructive force going in both directions, with a tally of seven goals & eight assists in Serie A last season a key contributor to Inter's Scudetto triumph.

Hakimi can be deployed in a variety of formations, either as a conventional right-sided defender in a back four or as a wing-back in a five. He's also more than comfortable operating in a wide attacking midfield role, a duty he performed often and with distinction at Dortmund. He's a capable defender who plays and thinks like an attacker, and he's lightning quick.

PSG's acquisition of Achraf Hakimi is a serious statement of intent. He'll bring youth, dynamism and world-class quality to their defence and add a totally new and fresh dimension to their attacking unit. With 31 Morocco caps under his belt, he looks set to become a world-class operator on the international scene too.
