France defender Raphael Varane has agreed a move to Manchester United from Real Madrid and now, Futaa takes a look at what qualities the 28-year-old will bring to Old Trafford.
Varane joined Real from Lens in 2011 and has a wealth of experience, having played over 300 times for the club, many of them alongside Sergio Ramos. He has 79 caps for France and appeared in each of their four Euro 2020 matches, helping them reach the last 16.
The numbers are undeniably compelling. Varane has won 18 major titles since joining Real Madrid, including three La Liga titles, one Copa del Rey title, four UEFA Champions League titles, and four FIFA Club World Cup titles. In 2018, he was also a World Cup winner with France.
Once a deal for England winger Jadon Sancho was reached, United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer made reinforcing the center of his defense a priority. At Old Trafford, the feeling is that Harry Maguire needs a long-term defensive partner, and Varane fits the bill.
A touch of Rio
Rio Ferdinand's departure from Manchester United created a vacuum in their defense that has never been adequately replaced. His ability to dominate forwards while being serene, elegant, and controlled in possession was part of what made the England international such an excellent central defense. Varane has the ability to restore Old Trafford's style.
Seal of approval
Cristiano Ronaldo, a former United forward, saw Varane's talent at Real Madrid eight years ago and predicted that his teammate would go on to become one of the best center-backs in the world. United will be hopeful that their old pick is correct.
