Villarreal president denies agreement with Newcastle over Unai Emery

Villarreal president Fernando Roig has denied reports that they have had an agreement with Newcastle United over manager Unai Emery.

Emery has heavily been linked with a return to the Premier League as Newcastle's search for a manager continues with reports from The Times today suggesting that they had struck an agreement with Villarreal for Emery to become their next manager.

But despite the presence of a €6million release clause, Villarreal president Roig has denied reports of a deal being agreed and says Emery is happy where he is.

“I’m sure that his mind is not drifting elsewhere. I know Unai has a contract with us and contracts are there to be fulfilled. We hope that we will be able to see that contract through until the end.

“Emery is very happy in Villarreal and has a contract in force. It is not a decision of Villarreal’s," Roig told A Punt Media.

Apart from Emery, Newcastle are said to be interested in hiring former AFC Bournemouth manager Eddie Howe with Frank Lampard being the other name on the list.

Emery who has previously been in charge of Arsenal, in the meantime, Emery will take charge of the Yellow Submarine this evening for a crucial Champions League clash with Young Boys at Estadio de la Ceramica.
