Ex-Arsenal coach Emery breaks silence over Newcastle United links

Villarreal boss Unai Emery has revealed Newcastle United are interested in appointing him as their new manager.

Newcastle are hunting for a permanent coach following the departure of Steve Bruce who was in charge of the Toon for just two years. The Magpies have opened talks with Emery's representatives and it appears they've made him their first choice to replace Bruce.

In a press conference on Tuesday after Villarreal's win over Young Boys in the Champions League, Unai revealed the Premier League side has shown interest.

"Newcastle have shown an interest but I've been thinking about the game all day," he said.

"There’s no offer. The offer would have to be via the club. I am focused on Villarreal. No more than that.

Villarreal president comments

"I have absolutely no idea [about any approach]. What I do know is that he has a contract with us and contracts are there to be fulfilled. I have no doubts about Unai’s professionalism," Fernando Roig said on Movistar.

The Spaniard has a buyout clause in his contract of €6m that Newcastle are willing to meet according to reports.
