'Ronaldo may walk out of Man United,' Merson explain

Former English Premier League star Paul Merson feels Manchester United’s failure to claim a UEFA Champions League spot may drive Cristiano Ronaldo out of the club.

A poor run of results that have left the Red Devils with 12 points off the top four, thus it is possible to lose out on the UEFA Champions League come May 2022.

The club’s recent appointment of an interim manager means more time may be needed to stack up the points.

"Manchester United needing an interim manager is a shambles - and Cristiano Ronaldo might decide to walk away in the summer," Merson said in his Daily Star column, as quoted by the Manchester Evening News

"He won't be hanging around if they don't finish in the top four because he will want to end his career in the Champions League.

"And that doesn't look terribly likely right now because United is a mess and will probably get thrashed by Chelsea this weekend.

Merson concluded to say there is hope in clinching a UCL spot but lifting the Premier League title is out of reach.

"I think Ronaldo would stay if they manage to qualify for the Champions League.

"But I said when they signed him that signing him means they are further away from winning the league than ever - and they are.

"He's been a problem because OIe Gunnar Solskjaer had a plan before they signed him and had to rip it all up to try and get him in the team, and it hasn't worked,” he concluded.

Coming up next is the visit of Mikel Arteta’s bouncing Arsenal on Thursday.
