Hlongwane leaves SA to join USA club Minnesota United in the MLS

Here’s a moment of pride for South African football. Bongokuhle Hlongwane going abroad to play his football for Minnesota United in Major League Soccer.

The club announced signing the 21-year-old Maritzburg United star via social media on Wednesday evening.

The Bafana Bafana forward has secured a three-year deal ahead of the new MLS season that starts in February.

“Minnesota United announced today the club has signed South African international Bongokuhle Hlongwane, via transfer from South African Premier Division side Maritzburg United, to a three-year contract with a one-year club option,” the club said.

“Hlongwane will be the club’s first U22 initiative signing and will join the Loons pending a physical and receipt of his P1 Visa and ITC. Additionally, he will occupy an international spot on Minnesota’s roster.”

The speedy wide striker leaves the club after delivering two goals and one assist in 15 games this season.
