AFCON: Egypt beat Cameroon on penalties to book final date with Senegal

Egypt advanced to the finals of the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations following a 3-1 win on penalties over hosts Cameroon.

After 120 minutes, nothing separated the two teams and the tie had to be decided on penalties. Moukoudi and Lea Siliki saw their penalties saved as N'jie sent his effort wide.

Cameroon was the better side in the opening exchanges as Toko-Ekambi showed great skills driving through Egypt's backline. However, Abou El did enough to make him, with Cameroon's forward attempted cross collected by the goalkeeper.

Off the post

The hosts went so close to taking the lead but were denied by the post. Ngameleu delivered a superb corner, which Ngadeu-Ngadjui could only direct onto the corner of the crossbar. Both he and Aboubakar went for the rebound but the was went wide.

Egypt needed to make an early change at the start of the second half to help them when going forward. Trezeguet was introduced in the 46th minute, replacing El Soleya.

Egypt's big chance came in the 56th minute following Hongla's huge mistake after his back pass went straight into Salah's path. Andre Onana came out running, Salah tried to chip it over him but it didn't quite come off as he blocked it for a throw-in.

Red card

Egypt coach was sent off in the final minutes by the center referee. Tolo and Sobhi squared up on the field, right in front of the Egypt dugout, and the manager made his own feelings known. Both Queiroz and his assistant have been badgering the officials and the referee was immediately out to show the coach a red card.

the Pharaohs will now face Senegal in the finals of the AFCON on Sunday while Cameroon take on Burkina Faso in the third-place playoff.
