Griezmann set to extend his loan stay at Atletico Madrid

Antoine Griezmann will spend another loan deal at Atletico Madrid in the coming season despite his patchy form.

The 31-year-old returned to Atletico in the summer of 2021 on a year-long loan with an option to extend it for another year and the club has decided to trigger that clause. While he hasn't had a good outing, Diego Simeone still believes in his abilities and feels that he will come good for the team in the coming season.

The terms of the deal also included an obligatory permanent transfer clause worth €40 million which will only be activated in 2023. The only condition that needs to be fulfilled is that he must pay 50% of the games in the ongoing as well as in the 2022-23 football season.

Griezmann has already appeared in more than 60% of Atletico’s games which includes 24 appearances in La Liga and nine outings in the UEFA Champions League; the player managing just eight strikes and five assists.

Before moving to Barcelona, the Frenchman had scored 133 goals for Atletico in a little more than 250 matches across all competitions. He won the UEFA Europa League once, Supercopa de Espana, and also reached the final of the UEFA Champions League where his side succumbed to arch-rivals Real Madrid.
