Ciaran’s own goal denies Newcastle top spot.

Ciaran Clark’s late own goal denied Newcastle United the chance to return to the summit of Championship table as the were held 2-2 by QPR.

The Irish defender nodded past his own goalkeeper in the 90th minute at St James’ Park on Wednesday night leaving his team a point below league leaders Brighton who play Huddersfield on Thursday night.

Rafa Benitez’s men took an early lead after 38 seconds through Jonjo Shelvey, but QPR equalized before half time. In the second half Matt Ritchie restored Newcastle’s lead but the Magpies settled for a 2-2 draw as Ciaran scored an own goal in the 90th minute.

Newcastle United are second placed with 59 points one point below league leaders Brighton, Reading are third with 55 points while Leeds United occupy fourth with 54 points.
