Confederations Cup 2017: Chile vs Australia Match Preview

25 Jun 2017, 17:31

Chile have one foot in the semi-finals of the FIFA Confederations Cup Russia 2017, secure in the knowledge that even a one-goal defeat to Australia in Moscow will see them through to the last four of the competition.

The situation is clear for the Australians, who have to win by two goals if they are to make sure of a semi-final place. A one-goal victory would leave the Socceroos relying on what happens in the day’s other match in Group B, while a draw or a defeat would mean an early flight home.

What you need to know

1. A total of five players are on yellow cards heading into the match and will be ineligible for the semi-finals should they pick up another: Jean Beausejour, Gonzalo Jara and Alexis Sanchez of Chile, and Bailey Wright and Trent Salisbury of Australia.

2. There are several survivors on both sides from their last meeting, in the group phase at the 2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil™, when La Roja won 3-1 in Cuiaba courtesy of goals from Sanchez, Beausejour and Jorge Valdivia. Tim Cahill scored Australia’s consolation.

3. Talking of Cahill, should he take to the pitch against Chile, he will become only the second player to reach 100 caps for Australia, after former goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer, who has 109 to his name. The striker is also the Socceroos’ leading all-time goalscorer.

Starting line-ups:

Chile: Bravo; Isla, Díaz, Jara, Mena;  Vidal, Silva, Aranguiz; Fuenzalida, Vargas, Sanchez

AustraliaRyan; Milligan, Sainsbury, McGowan; Irvine, Luongo; Kruse, Cahill, Troisi, Behich; Juric.
