Vihiga United reclaimed the top spot in the National Super League  with a hard fought 3-2 win over Ushuru FC in a league match played at Camp Toyoyo Grounds on Wednesday 26 July.

Vihiga took a two goal lead through Charles Okwemba and Keiphas Baraza but Ushuru fought back to equalize through Andrew Murunga and Bebeto Lwamba. Chris Masinza bagged the winner with nine minute to go.

The first half was largely balanced as both teams strived to take control of the match. Chances were few early on in the game as the teams looked to cancel each other at the middle of the park.

Vihiga however looked more enterprising going forward with Charles Okwemba, Kephas Baraza and Chris Masinza making inroads into the taxmen danger area.

Okwemba opener

Vihiga's persistence finally paid off off when former Ushuru man Charles Okwemba gave them the lead in the 27th minute. Masinza beat his marker on the right flank then crossed to Okwemba who finished with a simple tap in. Masinza had a chance to double Vihiga's lead two minutes later but shot wide from a prime position.

Quick goals

Two minutes before the break, a poor clearance from Fredrick Kentile gifted Vihiga a second as Keiphas Baraza collected the ball and fired past Kennedy Obwanda to double Vihiga's lead. Andrew Murunga reduced the deficit a minute later with a well half taken volley.

Ushuru started the game strongly after the interval with their long ball approach causing Vihiga all sorts of problems. Bebeto Lwamba and Andrew Murunga twice came to restoring parity but fluffed good chances.

The taxmen continued piling pressure on Edward Manoah's side but United's backline stood steadfast denying them on several occasions.

Ushuru finally got the equalizer through Bebeto Lwamba who rose high to head home from an Andrew Murunga cross.

The parity lasted for five minutes as Vihiga retook the lead through Chris Masinza. The winger fnished into the bottom right corner after receiving a precise pass from midfield.
