Will Tusker FC overcome Vihiga United test?
Shield defending champions Tusker FC will host National Super League leaders Vihiga United in the quarters of the competition at Nyayo Stadium on Sunday 1300 hours.
The two sides last faced off early this year in a friendly played in Chavakali and the clash ended in a 1-1 draw. Tusker and Vihiga United have not faced off in the Shield in the recent past.
The Brewers are unbeaten in the last nine matches of the competition. Their last loss came in round of 16 in 2015. Nzoia Sugar beat them 6-5 in the penalty shoot outs. They exited at the same stage in 2013 while in 2012 and 2014 they were eliminated at the semifinals and quarters respectively.
A 4-1 win over Butterfly FC in Meru guaranteed George Nsimbe’s charges a place in the quarters. They had beaten National Super League side Palos FC by a solitary goal and Coast based side SS Saad by 5-0 in the round of 32 and 64.
The National Super league giants will be hoping to reach the last four for the first time in the last four years. In 2014 the side exited at the second round after falling to Posta Rangers. In 2015 and 2016 they were eliminated at the round of 32 by Fortune and Agro Chemicals respectively.
Edward Manoah’s charges kicked off this year’s competition with a 7-1 win over Elim FC. They followed it with a 4-2 win over fellow Super League side Ushuru FC and a 5-4 win in penalty shoot-out over nieghbours Kakamega Homeboyz in the round of 16.
Having assembled a strong squad in the mid transfer window, Vihiga will be eager to compete against Tusker FC effectively.
