Shield: Vihiga United oust defending champions Tusker

Giant killers Vihiga United stunned defending champions Tusker FC beating them 2-0 in a Shield Tournament quarter final match played at the Nyayo National Stadium on Sunday 20 August.

A first half penalty goal from Charles Okwemba  and a late goal from substitute Dennis Lugalia settled the entertaining clash as the NSL leaders proved too good for the reigning KPL and Shield Tournament champions.

The match started at a slow pace with both teams taking a cautious approach. Tusker however looking more enterprising with Danson Kago and Boniface Muchiri on the flanks proving a handful for the NSL side however none of the team h clear cut chance early on.

Okwemba goal 

 From a rare Vihiga United corner kick, Tusker conceded a penalty after Marlon Tangauzi handled a Chris Masinza delivery. Veteran Charles Okwemba stepped up to beat Duncan Ochieng on Tusker goal. 

Vihiga United looked more dangerous after taking the lead, Ugandan forward Rashid Kyambadde missed two glorious chances from Masinza deliveries while at the other end Kago missed a good chance after being set up by Muchiri.

 Both teams made changes midway through the first half; Vihiga hauled off a visibly off colour Dennis Wafula for Godfrey Airo while injured Cersidy Okeyo was replaced by Jackson Macharia on Tusker side.

Vihiga looked more dangerous after the break causing Tusker endless problems. Airo shot over a few minutes after the restart, Kyambadde too squandered a couple of chances. 

Substitute Dennis Lugalia sealed the win with a late header to send the defending champions crashing.
