CHAN 2018: Rwanda books slot

CHAN 2018: Rwanda books slot

13 Nov 2017, 10:50

A 0-0 draw in the second leg fixture against Ethiopia could not prevent Rwanda from clinching the final slot in CHAN 2018 edition to be played in Morocco early next year [2018].

The Rwandans qualified on a 3-2 aggregate win having won the first leg by that score in Addis Ababa last weekend. Egypt withdrew from the competition for home-based footballers, citing the refusal of clubs to release players, and this gave Rwanda and Ethiopia a second chance to qualify.

Both countries had lost in the final round of regional eliminators -- Rwanda to Uganda and Ethiopia to Sudan. Rabat hosts the 16-nation finals draw this Friday as  Agadir, Casablanca, Marrakech and Tangier are cities scheduled as hosts.

Rwanda and Libya are the only former champions participating as the Democratic Republic of Congo failed to qualify and Tunisia did not enter because of domestic football restructuring.
