The Sportsman of the Year Awards [SOYA] panel has assured that there will be a free and fair nominations process and urged stakeholders to continue fronting the names of candidates they would like shortlisted.

According to the panel chairman Watson Karuma, SOYA will maintain its process of helping build on young talents available in the country which is evident in the theme 'passing the baton' adopted for the January 2018 event.

Straight to the point

The simple theme also symbolizes the changes that took place at the National Olympic Committee of Kenya (NOCK), who has a new office led by SOYA founder Paul Tergat who is the founder of the SOYA event.

-There are a lot of youths coming up and this has therefore been an exciting period trying to get nominees for this event. We assure that it is going to be another very fair process and we ask for advice and forwarding of nominees so that we have legitimate winners, he stated.

The event is scheduled to take place on 17 January 2018 at a yet to be named venue.

Starlets' glory

Women national team Harambee Starlets were in January 2017 crowned the Women Sports Team of the Year at the Soya Awards held at the Kenyatta International Convention Center (KICC) Nairobi.

Starlets had a year to enjoy [2016] reaching to the African Women Cup of Nations even though the team did not go past the group stage. Starlets beat Telkom Orange, Roll Ball team, KPA and U23 volleyball team.

Kenyan Premier League and GOTV Shield holders Tusker was first runners-up in the Men Sports Team of the Year with Rugby 7s claiming the crown. Kenyan international Joseph Okumu who plies his trade in South Africa has finished as the second runners-up in the Most Promising Boy category with Mwanahalima Adam claiming the Most Promising Girl crown.

The Football Kenya Federation has emerged as the second runners-up in the Sport Federation of the Year with Tennis Kenya taking the crown.
