United to bid for City target

Manchester United are reportedly ready to make an offer to Shakhtar Donetsk for midfielder Frederico Rodrigues Santos, commonly known as Fred.

Scottish tabloid Daily Record has claimed that United boss Jose Mourinho has shown a keen interest in signing Fred in the ongoing transfer window in order to further bolster his midfield as the race for the coveted Premier League title approaches its final lap.

The report further claims that the Special One believes that the Brazilian is the perfect long-term replacement for veteran midfield maestro Michael Carrick, who is set to retire when his current deal at Old Trafford expires this summer.

This development is, however, a big blow for bitter rivals Manchester City since manager Pep Guardiola had already started working on a deal with the Ukrainian side for Fred, since the tactician had hoped that the 24-year-old will subsequently succeed midfielder Fernandinho at the Etihad.
