Pellegrino sacked, Soton lineup replacement

Southampton parted ways with manager Mauricio Pellegrino on Monday night and the club has started chasing for his replacement.

With just eight games remaining, the Saints are just one point and one place above the relegation zone. They’ve won just one of their last 17 league games and 3-0 defeat to Newcastle on Saturday saw Pellegrino axed on Monday night. Pellegrino was appointed as the new boss in June succeeding Claude Puel.

The Saints are hopeful of landing a new manager before they take on Wigan on Sunday for a place in the FA Cup semi-finals. Marco Silva, who was fired by Watford in January is the leading candidate for the job though any approach will be complicated after being overlooked last summer in favour of Pellegrino.

Assistant boss Carlos Compagnucci and assistant first-team coach Xavier Tamarit have also left the club.
