Keep off Rupia, Nzoia warns clubs
Nzoia Sugar head coach Bernard Mwalala has warned clubs pursuing Elvis Rupia to keep off his lead striker.
Rupia is the current Kenyan Premier League (KPL) top scorer with 11 goals from 15 KPL matches. He has attracted interest from several local clubs including Tusker FC and AFC Leopards.
Mwalala, however, insists that the club is not willing to let the former Nakuru AllStars forward depart in June and has warned clubs against approaching the attacker.
"We are aware that a number of clubs are interested in him. It's unfortunate because that's likely to affect his focus. He is our player and as a coach, I wouldn't want to lose my first choice striker in mid-season because getting a replacement is not easy, " he said.
Mwalala adds that a mid-season move may affect the player's growth noting that he still has key areas he has to improve on.
"I really don't think he is ready for a move. Yes, he is scoring goals but he has a lot of areas to improve on and he can only work in those areas by playing week in, week out. Moving to another club will mean he has to prove himself and fight for a place in the team which may not be easy. My advice for him is he should remain at Nzoia, at least for this season and help the team, in the process, he'll improve himself, " he added.
This has been Rupia's breakthrough season at Nzoia after a difficult 2017 season.
