CAF CL: History made as KCCA humble Al Ahly in Kampala

Ugandan champions KCCA FC produced a stunning performance as they beat their way to a memorable 2-0 victory over Al Ahly at the Mandela National stadium in Namboole.

It was the first game for any Ugandan club on home soil in the group stages of the CAF elite club competition-and it couldn’t be celebrated in a better way than humbling the record African champions.

Despite struggling in the opening minutes, the Ugandans grew in confidence as the match advanced showing intensity, quality and stamping the ‘our way’ style of football.

Early chances

Okello had the first close attempt with a stinging shot but was blocked by Samir’s hand for a free kick. Mustafa Kizza took the responsibility but flew his curling shot just an inch wide.

Mahlabi retaliated with a quick one-man counter-attack half the length of the pitch but failed to catch with the speed of the ball when it mattered.

The Egyptians blew a glorious chance in the 9th minute. Marwan released Mohammed Hussein with a cute splitting pass; the shirt 27 raced through after beating his marker but Lukwago came out boldly and made a timely tackle to deny the striker in a one-on-one situation.

That save was marvelous but his moment of the match arrived in the 23rd when he flew to the right direction to block Said Walid’s penalty. Habib Kavuma had handled Marwan’s shot from inside the box.

Tables turn

Saddam Juma, who was just returning from a long-term injury, sent the stadium into frenzy in the 73rd minute when he collected a sweet pass from the about 23 yards to launch a rocket that beat the towering world cup-bound Mohammed Elshenawy who had stretched to his limits in Ahly’s goal.

Timothy Awany doubled the lead at the stroke of normal time from the spot to cool down the pressure from the visitors. Derrick Nsibambi was hacked while trying to drive inside the 12-yards from the right.

The win sends KCCA to second on the group A table, at least for some hours.
