Isuza spot-on as AFC Leopards claws Thika United to end winless run

AFC Leopards ended its eight-match winless run in the Kenyan Premier League with a 2-0 win over Thika United at the Thika Sub County Stadium on Sunday 20th May.

After a barren first half, Ingwe took the lead in the 61st minute through Whyvonne Isuza who converted from the penalty spot. Ezekiel Odera made it 2-0 six minutes later firing home from an Isuza cross. Odera was however dismissed moments later for "aggressive' celebration.

Chances

The first chance of the game fell to AFC Leopards in the third minute.  Moses Mburu's well-delivered cross from the left was met by Robinson Kamura but the defender's header failed to hit the target.  The game degenerated to a cagey affair after that early chance, most of the action was witnessed in the middle of the park.

Thika got their first opportunity in the 16th minute, Shami Kibwana did well to set up Mata Masakidi but the former AFC Leopards man spared his side shooting directly at keeper Ezekiel Owade. Whyvonne Isuza tried his luck from range moments later but he couldn't trouble Thika keeper Eliud Emase as his shot went narrowly wide.

Mukangula miss

The last clear-cut chance of the first stanza went Thika's way. A quick interchange of passes between Eugene Mukangula and Shami Kibwana set up the former but the forward blasted his effort wide.

AFC Leopards striker who had been uncharacteristically quiet in the game had a chance to break the deadlock in the 59th minute but Emase was equal to task pulling a superb save. At the other end, Mukangula forced Owade to a similar save moments later with a thunderbolt from the box.

Goals

Ingwe finally got the breakthrough in the 61st minute from the penalty spot. Youngster Baraka Badi fouled former Thika United man Ezekiel Odera in the area, a penalty was awarded and Whyvonne Isuza cooly slotted home his  9th goal of the season. Isuza returned the favor six minutes later, setting up Odera who fired past Emase to double Ingwe's lead.

Odera's celebrations were cut short a minute later when he was given his marching orders for a second booking for allegedly taunting Thika supporters in his celebration. Ingwe had to battle to protect the lead a man down. Masakidi wasted a huge chance in the 85th minute heading over after being set up by Mukangula.
