Arsenal overcomes BATE to book last 16 slot

English Premier League side Arsenal FC are through to the UEFA Europa league last 16 after overcoming visiting BATE Borisov 3-0 (3-1 aggregate) in a clash staged at the Emirates Stadium on Thursday 21 February.

Arsenal were off the mark in the fourth minute when Aubameyang bombed down the right and crossed low only for BATE’s Volkov, facing his own goal, hanged out a leg to slice the ball into the bottom left of his net with the keeper wrong footed.

In what was a dominating display by the hosts, BATE were resilient enough to stop the goals but they didn’t still have a chance in the 39th minute. Aubameyang’s good work earned the hosts a corner on the left. Ozil sent the set piece towards the penalty spot, where Mustafi rose above a dozy Baga to plant a header into the bottom left as the Unai Emery men raced to a 2-0 lead heading into the break.

Safe

With Arsenal having a 2-1 aggregate heading into the second half, they were to make the tie safe in the hour mark through Sokratis. Mkhitaryan bursted down the right and very nearly got a shot away from a tight angle. Filipovic did extremely well to slide in and block for a corner but it was only brief relief. Ozil whipped the resultant corner towards the far post. Scherbitski came off his line to punch, but made an awful ball of it, flapping at thin air. Sokratis, only just on for Koscielny, headed home from a couple of yards.

In what was to be a trouble free second half, Arsenal were to hand Dennis Suarez his first home game when he came on for Henrik Mkhitaryan with ten minutes remaining on the clock; the win giving coach Unai a chance in winning his fourth Europa League title.
