Match preview 🖊
Manuel Neuer will lead an otherwise new-look Germany out against Serbia at the Volkswagen Arena in Wolfsburg on Wednesday. It will be a new-look side with Neuer’s Bayern Munich teammates Thomas Müller, Mats Hummels and Jerome Boateng have not been considered, but that does mean there is space in the squad for three potential debutants – Werder Bremen’s Maximilian Eggestein, Hertha Berlin’s Niklas Stark and RB Leipzig’s Lukas Klostermann. Germany will have to be on their toes if Luka Jovic has anything to do with it.
The Eintracht Frankfurt striker fired Die Adler into the UEFA Europa League quarter-finals at Inter Milan’s expense last Thursday and is the Bundesliga’s second-top scorer with 15 goals. Aleksandar Mitrovic could be the one to make way given the 21-year-old’s form. Jovic has Frankfurt teammates Filip Kostic and Mijat Gacinovic for company in the Serbia squad, while Bremen centre-back Milos Veljkovic completes the Bundesliga-based contingent in the Serbian set-up. With Germany bringing a fresh new squad to this next generation, they'll be an unpredictable entity. Watch out for Serbia's Dusan Tadic, a man in brilliant form for Ajax Amsterdam.
Team news 📰
Only two survivors from the World Cup winning squad of 2014 remain for Germany, showing the level of transition they're facing. Toni Kroos & Manuel Neuer are those two survivors, but Jogi Loew has stressed the need for younger established players Josh Kimmich and Leon Goretzka to take on leadership roles.
Serbia will be spearheaded by in-form Ajax playmaker Dusan Tadic & Eintracht Frankfurt striker Luka Jovic.
