Spain legend Xavi against 48-team World Cup

19 Mar 2019, 16:50

Former Spain and Barcelona midfielder, Xavi Hernandez, has said that he is not in favour of the FIFA World Cup getting extended from 32 to 48 clubs.

FIFA have been increasingly hinting at a decision to increase the event to 48 clubs, leaving many figures of the game divided on the proposal ahead of the 2026 tournament in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

"It's too much and too long," Xavi told beIN Sports.

"Imagine 48 teams in Qatar, it will not be good in my opinion.

"It's still for the organisers to decide, but for now Qatar is doing everything to prepare for 32 teams and it will be difficult to change it for more teams.

"Also, it's good for football to have 32. That's more than enough,” concluded the 39-year-old who won the 2010 World Cup in South Africa with Spain.
