UEFA CL: Manchester City knocked out despite win over Tottenham
Manchester City's dream of a quadruple came to an end in dramatic circumstances as VAR changed the game with a huge call in the dying stages. Sterling thought he won it and City were celebrating but it was disallowed - correctly - for offside on Aguero.
Just what City needed to calm their nerves and it was Sterling giving his side an early lead in the fourth minute. Spurs started with a positive formation but City caught them cold. De Bruyne made use of the space in midfield and move it out to Sterling. Trippier showed him inside onto his right foot. From 15 yards, Sterling whipped a quite brilliant effort straight into the far corner.
Spurs responded after just three minutes. Kompany got pulled out of position and the ball broke in space about 18 yards out. Son curled on around Ederson and into the net.
No Kane! No problem, Son was the man. Spurs attacked in numbers once again, Son picked it up just off the left about 18 yards out. He only had eyes for the far corner and whipped a sensational effort into the net. Ederson was at full-stretch but could not get near.
And with 11 minutes of play at Etihad, we had four goals. Pochettino was furious on the bench - his team was playing so open. This time Bernardo sneaked down the right and poked an effort at goal which deflected off Rose and into the net. It was scrappy but City was level.
Well, Sterling grabbed his brace, making it 3-2 in favour of City. De Brune made yards down the right before delivering a cross across the face of goal. Everyone missed it apart from Sterling who forced it home a the back post.
De Bruyne dragged his team back into the game. He drove through the heart of Spurs midfield and threaded a perfect ball down the side for Aguero. The angle was tight but that didn't matter as Aguero thumped one into the roof of the net.
Spurs forced the ball home from the corner but did it hit Llorente's arm??? It was a VAR check. The referee was at the pitch-side screen. The referee made a huge goal as he said the ball brushed Llorente's arm and went in off his hip and the goal stood.
Unbelievable. Sterling thought he had netted a dramatic winner but it was disallowed as Aguero was offside. Amazing scenes. Sterling was on hand to finish from close range and send the home fans absolutely wild. Pep was down the touchline. But. The replays showed that Aguero was a toenail offside in the build-up.
Spurs will now meet Ajax, who shocked Juventus on Tuesday night in the semifinals of the tournament.
