Lampard makes history with win over Leeds

16 May 2019, 12:20

Frank Lampard led his Derby County side to an astonishing comeback that saw them beat Leeds United 4-3 on aggregate and qualify for the Championship playoffs, creating history in the process.

By winning away to Leeds, Derby became the first team in history to lose their first play-off semi-final at home and overturn the deficit away from home and make it to the finals.

They will now face Aston Villa in the finals, with Lampard set to meet his former teammate and friend at Chelsea John Terry, who is the Villa assistant manager.

The Rams seemed to be heading out when Leeds took the lead in the 24th minute, but they equalised in the 45th minute to after a mix-up between Leeds keeper and one of his defenders.

The match was turned on its head in the second half, as Derby went 3-1 up by the 58th minute, leaving the home team to play catchup.

Leeds scored in the 62nd minute to pull level on aggregate, but Derby's 85th-minute goal meant the tie ended 4-3 in aggregate.

The final between Aston Villa and Derby will be played on the 27th of May.
