Arsenal midfielder Henrikh Mkhitaryan has been given safety assurances in BAKU by Azerbaijan’s UK ambassador Tahir Taghizadeh ahead of Europa League final with Chelsea.
There have been concerns over Mkhitaryan’s status in the country for the final due to non-existent diplomatic relations between the two Caucasus states because of disputes over the Nagorno-Karabakh region. However, Tahir has told Sky Sports the Armenian can contact him directly to guarantee his safety in Baku.
"Absolutely,” he said when asked if former Manchester United midfielder could contact him directly to guarantee safety assurances
"I would be delighted for him to have a conversation with me. This is a Class A event, if our purpose is to play political games around it it is something different, you are being paid as a footballer, not a politician, let's leave other issues aside,” he added.
Azerbaijan’s FA has insisted, Mkhitaryan, who did not travel with Arsenal to face Qarabag FK last year his safety in the country is guaranteed.
