Chemelil Sugar boosted their hopes of survival in the Kenya Premier, after battling Sofapaka to a barren draw at the Kenyatta Stadium on Wednesday afternoon.
In the early kickoff match in Machakos ‘Batoto ba Mungu’ could not find a way past the Sugarmen’s defence, settling to a 0-0 draw.
The score also means Sofapaka missed the chance to close in on second-placed Bandari FC, who are taking on Mathare in another match.
The match missed the pomp for long periods, with both teams restricted to few real scoring chances.
Chemelil were to first to seriously threaten, when Tindi Biko’s ferocious freekick found its way to the goal, with keeper Ndikumana forced to make a great save, tipping it over for a corner kick.
Sofapaka responded almost immediately with a brilliant team play, starting with Kasumba, who crossed into the box for Avire, who in turn backheeled for Aswani whose stinging shot was punched away by the keeper.
In the 43rd minute, Achesa dummied away from his marker and set up Aswani, but his shot was deflected for a corner.
Sofapaka should have scored on the stroke of halftime when Avire was put through on goal, but his eventual shot was too high as both teams went into the break tied at 0-0.
Sofapaka came back with intent after the restart, and showed some brilliant team play once again, this time Aswani’s shot deflected for an easy catch by the keeper.
Aswani, who was arguably the man of the match came agonizingly close to grabbing a goal on the half-hour mark but was once again denied by the brilliance of the keeper.
There were chances for the former champions to grab the all-important goal, but Avire and Waruru's chances all went begging in the closing stages fo the match, as both teams settled for a barren draw.
The results saw Sofapaka’s hopes of finishing as runners up take a huge hit, as they remain third on the log with 58 points, four points adrift of second-placed Bandari.
They interestingly face the Dockers in their next match away in Mombasa in another key fixture.
Chemelil, on the other hand, remains 15th on the log and are not yet safe from relegation, but the draw boosts their chances of survival. They next play Mathare United.
