Xhaka offers apology to Arsenal fans after Baku debacle

Arsenal midfielder Granit Xhaka has offered the team's fans an apology, after the 4-1 humiliating defeat to Chelsea in the Europa League final on Wednesday night.

The Swiss international started the match in Baku and came close to scoring with a long-range shot with scores still at 0-0, only for his shot to kiss the bar and go out for a goal kick.

Chelsea then went on to stage a superb second-half show and blew away the Gunners, extinguishing their hopes of playing in the Champions League next season.

In a post on The Arsenal Twitter account, Xhaka acknowledged it hurt that they could not 'bring the trophy to Arsenal', but thanked the fans who attended.

The loss meant Arsenal's wait for a European title continues but will have another shot at the Europa League title once again next season.

The team's failure in Europe summed up their season, in which they finished fifth in the English Premier League standings, 28 points adrift of winners Manchester City.
