Harambee Stars Player Profile: Eric Ouma

With Harambee Stars, head coach Sebastien Migne naming his squad for the upcoming 2019 African Cup of Nations tournament in Egypt, Futaa looks at the profiles of the players who will represent Kenya in the continental showpiece.

Eric Ouma Otieno

DOB: September 27, 1996

Current Club: Vasalund IF, Sweden

Previous Clubs: Gor Mahia (Kenya), Kolkheti Poti (Georgia), KS Kastrioti (Albania)

As a nation, the left back position is slowly becoming a strong side with so many players lying in wait. Apart from Abud Omar and Eric Ouma, Mathare United’s David Owino and KCB ‘s Bolton Omwenga are some of the best who can be slotted in the same position.;

But Ouma, popularly known as Marcelo is not your ordinary player. Having joined Gor Mahia straight from Kakamega High School, the youngster was not unfazed by the demands that come with representing the Kenyan giants and only spent a season before making a move to Georgia where he was roped by Kolkheti Poti.

Stars Omission

He seeming regressed during his stay in Georgia and at one time omitted from the national team squad led by Stanely Okumbi who questioned the competitiveness of the Georgian league.  In a bid to regain his form, the player moved to KF Tirana coached by his former coach Marcelo Ze Maria at Gor Mahia but was loaned to KS Kastrioti.

The move didn’t help his progress though as he injured himself weeks into his new environment. A move to Sweden’s Vasalund IF in July 2018 looked like the move, he needed to revive his young career.

Considered as the only back up to Abud Omar, Ouma can slot in the left wing and gave a good account of himself when he was selected to feature as a winger by head coach Sebastien Migne in the home qualifier against Ethiopia. His work rate and his ability to cover Abud on the left flank when the team is under attack is something that will be a plus for Harambee Stars in the competition.
