Following two extremely difficult seasons that ended with VfL Wolfsburg escaping relegation via the playoffs, in 2018/19 the Bundesliga side managed to settle into a rhythm which qualified them for the UEFA Europa League.
The Green-Whites will commence their preseason preparations on June 30, the side takes a look back at the standout records, fact and figures from last season.
Constant threat Weghorst
The signing of 26-year-old Wout Weghorst last summer proved to be a success when the Dutch striker wrapped up the season with a total of 17 goals and seven assists respectively. This record managed to place him in fourth place in the Bundesliga, level with Eintracht Frankfurt's Sebastien Halle; whereas Bayern Munich's Robert Lewandowski tallied 29.
Rexhbecaj makes his breakthrough
Elvis Rexhbecaj kickstarted started last season with 28 matches for the Wolves, with the 21-year-old comfortably establishing himself a regular in midfield. The German-Albanian was part of the 8-1 season victory last against Augsburg where he scored his second goal of the campaign and managed an assist.
Unstoppable Arnold
Maximilian Arnold was another academy graduate that put on great displays during the 2018/19 season. Arnold registered six assists - doubling his previous best set in 2016/17.
Safe hands Casteels
Though Pavao Pervan turned out to be a more than adequate replacement for him towards the end of the season, Koen Casteels was still a steady presence between the sticks. He recorded eight clean sheets in 2018/19, his most in the Bundesliga to date.
Knoche and Mehmedi impress
Centre-back Robin Knoche, another VfL youth team product, scored three goals, equalling his record from the 2013/14 season. Meanwhile, Admir Mehmedi managed to establish himself in the team after moving to the club during the 2017/18 winter break. The Swiss attacker has proven to be a real creative force, notching five assists – matching his previous best from 2015/16 when he was playing for Bayer 04 Leverkusen.
