Obi Mikel banking on history to beat Algeria and book a slot in the AFCON final

Ahead of their semi-final showdown against Algeria on Sunday 15th July, Nigerian skipper John Obi Mikel is banking on history to knock out the Desert Foxes.

Since 22nd March 1980, the two sides have locked horns 16 times in major tournaments with Nigeria having the upper hand, winning seven games, drawing on four occasions while Algeria have emerged victorious in five games.

It is the Super Eagles however that have enjoyed recent success with the 1990 African Cup of Nations being the last time Algeria beat Nigeria in a major tournament.

Speaking ahead of the semi-final, Mikel is looking to draw inspirations from recent head to head success against Algeria, "This performance against South Africa was all about the focus and concentration, to stay disciplined all the time and not give them space. We had to fight from the first to the last minute.

"We’ve done so well in the past against them Algeria and we need to reproduce the same kind of performance and beat them like we have done before. We made it really tight for them and we have to play the same way in the semi-final."
