Seventeen years ago, Senegal produced one of the biggest upsets in World Cup history as they defeated Champions France on the opening day of an ill-fated title defence.
The tournament in Korea/Japan produced a few underdog stories but that shock opening day win for Senegal against France was something that no-one in the watching world expected.
Aliou Cissé now Senegal's head coach, led the Lions of Teranga on a day that will go down in Senegalese football folklore. Here's how the teams liked up in a classic David vs Goliath story when the underdogs shocked the world class stars and the watching world alike.
🇫🇷 France (4-3-3):
Fabien Barthez; Lilian Thuram, Marcel Desailly, Frank Leboeuf, Bixente Lizarazu; Patrick Vieira, Emmanuel Petit, Youri Djorkaeff; Sylvain Wiltord, David Trezeguet, Thierry Henry.
🇸🇳 Senegal (5-4-1):
Tony Sylva; Omar Daf, Lamine Diatta, Aliou Cisse, Ferdinand Coly, Pape Malick Diop; Khalilou Fadiga, Salif Diao, Pape Bouba Diop, Moussa Ndiaye; El Hadji Diouf.
Relive the action from that day all the way back in 2002:
In March 2020, Cissé would have been the Senegal coach for five years. They reached the quarterfinals of the 2017 AFCON, falling to Cameroon on penalties, and qualified for the 2018 World Cup but failed to get out of a tough group containing Japan, Poland and Colombia.
The Lions of Teranga's upward curve continued as they reached the 2019 AFCON final, eventually falling to Algeria. Cissé will be hoping his side can go one better in 2021 in Cameroon.
