Giroud: Chelsea move made me a World Cup winner

Olivier Giroud has opened up on his move from Arsenal to Chelsea, revealing that the switch was crucial in his selection to the French national team for the World Cup.

The 32-year-old lifted the trophy in Russia in 2018 together with teammate N'Golo Kante, after making the cut in Didier Deschamps' team.

According to the marksman, however, it was the move from the then-coached Arsene Wenger side that was crucial in the end.

"I didn't want to leave," Giroud said in an interview to BBC. "I spoke with the boss - at this time, Arsene [Wenger] - and I told him: 'Look, gaffer, I need some game time to play at the World Cup, that's massive for me,"

"At the end of the day, we won it, so it was very important for me to leave. It was tough for me, but it was amazing to sign for a club like Chelsea,"

"It was like an improvement for me because - OK, it's Manchester City now - but Chelsea have been the best club in England over the past 10 years. It was a new challenge with big motivation, big targets,"

The Frenchman extended his stay at the Bridge after signing a one-year contract extension last month, having guided the club to the Europa League title by scoring 11 goals, including the opener in the final against his former club.

He has so far scored 18 goals and assisted 13 times since his €17 million move from Arsenal in January 2018.
