Derby County's new manager Phillip Cocu has opened up in an interview with Sky Sports about his previous managing stints, his winning philosophy and his plans with The Rams ahead of the new English Championship season.
One might say that Cocu has himself an impressive football resume considering the fact that he has won eight league titles as a player and manager - also tallying 101 caps for the Netherlands and approximately 300 appearances for Barcelona - that is impressive.
"I am a winner," the Derby manager told Sky Sports in an interview after being announced for the first time.
"I really like to win. If I lose, you will see a different person in front of you."
The 48-year-old first experienced the taste of management when he took over the reins at PSV Eindhoven and during his spells it was reported that the side won three Eredivisie league titles.
However, he went on to have another managerial stint - this time in the Turkish Super Lig with Fenerbahce. This move, on the other hand, was to prove difficult as the side experienced turmoil and were nearly relegated; with Cocu being shown the door within four months of occupying his new role.
As he adds onto his resume, Cocu will experience another side of football with the Derby County in the Championship - he will lead the side in their opening game again Huddersfield Town on Monday night (August 5) where he will hope to taste victory in his first stint in English football.
However, looking at the former Netherlands international as a player, he told Sky Sports that he may not have been the very best on the field as opposed to some of his former teammates Clarence Seedorf, Edgar Davids, Dennis Bergkamp, and Patrick Kluivert respectively.
However his philosophy and work ethic is something to admire and the football world could witness this during his time at PSV and now he will look to do the same at Derby and prove why he was brought over to take over the reins from Frank Lampard.
"I set my standards and my demands high," he said. "If you have ambition and if you want to achieve something it won't come easily. You have to work hard and make sacrifices.
"Training hard is something a lot of people do because it is part of their job, but it is the sacrifices away from the pitch, that are sometimes more difficult, that can get the maximum out of your career. You have to be mentally strong to do both."
Frank Lampard had one memorable season with Derby as he was at the edge of promotion to the Premier League but they fell off the wagon after suffering defeat to Aston Villa back in May 2019.
Despite Lampard's departure and many players at disposal, Cocu is of the belief that he will inspire the team to promotion but believes that everything works in time and success should not be rushed.
"We can use the experiences they have of the play-off games positively. The goal of the club is to get to the Premier League but you never know when the moment will arrive to try and achieve that.
"It's a long season, though, and first we need to focus on a good start."
