German club Mainz confirm Nigerian striker Awoniyi deal

Nigerian striker Taiwo Awoniyi has completed a loan move to German Bundesliga club Mainz.

The club confirmed the deal after reaching an agreement with parent club Liverpool, and added that Awoniyi will train with the squad for the first time on Thursday evening.

Liverpool had on Tuesday confirmed the player will spend his 2019/20 season on loan at Mainz, after a successful campaign with Belgian side Royal Excel Mouscron.

"Taiwo #Awoniyi's loan deal from @LFC has now been confirmed!" Mainz wrote in a tweet.

"He will train with the Zerofivers for the first time this afternoon #UpTheMainz"

The 21-year-old joined Liverpool in 2015 but has not played a competitive game for the Reds.

Awoniyi has played on loan to FSV Frankfurt, NEC, Royal Excel Mouscron and Gent.
