CAFCC: Al Ahly Shandi hold Bandari in drab first leg

Bandari FC have all to do in the second leg following a barren draw against Sudanese outfit Al Ahly Shandi in the CAF Confederations Cup Preliminary Round on Saturday 10th August.

Al Ahly Shandi displayed some attacking intent from the onset as they did not hold back, aiming to grab an early lead that would have shredded the plans of Bandari. The Sudanese club were looking to break their duck in the competition after making an appearance in the qualifiers of the competition in every edition since 2012 but are yet to get into the group stages, coming close in the 2013 and 2016 when they exited at the second round.

Shandi thought they had taken the lead in the 10th minute when Yasir Mozamil got past the onrushing Michael Wanyika in goal to let loose of a foible shot Mohamed Abdalla tapped the ball into the net from an offside position with the referee ruling out the goal.

Bandari settled into the game after a shaky start and dominated possession but still found it hard to muster any meaningful chances. Abdalla Hassan got squandered a glorious opportunity in the 25th minute when the Shandi defense failed to clear a long ball that fell to the unmarked Hassan but his shot was pushed wide for a corner by the keeper as both teams went into the half time break locked at 0-0.

Shandi had a mirror start to the second half and almost went ahead seconds after the restart when Mohamed Abdalla beat the offside trap but with acres of space ahead of him he couldn't compose himself to tap the ball into the net with Michael Wanyika closing him down to take his shot wide for a corner.

Bandari dictated play in the second half but found it hard to breach the well-drilled Shandi defense who stood tall at everything that was thrown at them. Not even the attacking subs of Wycliffe Ochomo, Benjamin Mosha and Shaban Kenga could inspire them to a win as Shandi held on for the draw.

The Dockers travel to Sudan for the return leg on Friday 23rd August.
