Arsenal defender Olowu declares for Nigeria

Arsenal defender Joseph Olowu has declared he wants to commit his international future to Nigeria.

Olowu plays for Arsenal U23 side, and was initially pencilled to be part of the Flying Eagles preparatory camp in Germany before the 2019 FIFA U-20 World Cup but injury cut short that dream.

The 19-year-old England born is now back to fitness and trains with the Arsenal first-team. He told Andrew Randa that Nigeria has always been on his mind and will always be the first choice.

“I want to play for my country Nigeria and do the nation proud. This has always been my dream and I am hoping it happens soon.

“There was some contact before the FIFA U20 World Cup but I got injured around that period so I could not link up with the team.

“I was super excited to see Tom Dele-Bashiru (Watford) and Nnamdi Ofobhor (Bournemouth) at the U20’s and this further fueled my dreams,” Olowu added.

“I hope to be given a chance with the U23’s. Nigeria has a lot of good players all over the globe but I am looking forward to playing for my country. I hope I get picked so I can show what I can do.”

“Training with the Arsenal first team and playing for the U23’s have helped me regain full fitness and I hope that I get the call after the disappointment of the U20’s".

Olowu is expected to start for Arsenal in the U23 game against Arsenal on Friday at the Emirates Stadium in London.
