CAF CL: Gor Mahia whitewash Aigle at Kasarani

Gor Mahia is through to the next round of the CAF Champions League after hammering Burundi's Noir Aigle 5-1 in a one-sided encounter staged at the MISC Kasarani on Sunday 25 August.

Gor ambition to get an early goal was shown from the onset with Nicholas Kipkurui being a constant threat for the visitors on the right-wing.

Boniface Omondi had the perfect chance of putting his side into the lead on the fifth minute after a half a clearance from the opposition keeper fell to him, instead of looping the ball into the empty net, the former Nzoia FC man decided to dribble into the box before his feeble shot was blocked by the Noir defence.

Own Goal

A minute later, the home team had a penalty claim after Kenneth Muguna had been brought down but the appeals fell into the deaf ears. But even before the dust could settle, their persistence was to pay with a Noir defender deflecting a Muguna effort in his own net.

Kipkurui was to double the hosts lead in the 16th minute after heading home a Lawrence Juma floated ball; this after the forward found himself unmarked in the opposition box.

Despite a first-half substitution Aigle was to concede a third through Kipkurui who capitalized on some uncleared danger in their box; the goals being the difference in the first half.

The second half was going to be some formality with the hosts resorting to keeping the ball with some crisp display. The domination handed them opportunities but when they came they were either wasted or cleared by the Noir defence who had resorted to clearing anything that came their way.

More Goals

That, however, didn't stop Gor Mahia from adding a fourth in the 64th minute through Dickson Ambundo who capitalized on some erroneous parry from the opposition keeper. Kipkurui thought he had grabbed his hattrick a minute later after his looping header shook the onion bag but the second assistant referee's flag was already up.

Boniface Omondi was to add a fifth goal minutes to the 70th-minute mark as the home side introduced Shafiq Batambuze for goalscorer Ambudo.

In as much as they were poor, Aigle was to pull a goal back in the 74th minute through Benjamin Gasongo and it was another tragedy for Gor when substitute Batambuze was to pull off with what seemed like an aggravated injury; Samuel Onyango threw to take his place.

Gor last sub was to see Ernest Wendo replace Juma and there was still time for Onyango to waste a glorious opportunity with the forward shooting straight at the keeper after being put through by Muguna.
