Sundowns vs SuperSport to light up MTN8 weekend

It’s the MTN8 semi-finals weekend! The Tshwane derby is the fixture on everyone’s lips. Futaa’s looks at what to expect from the first leg clash as well as Polokwane City & Highlands Park…

SuperSport’s humbling 2-0 loss to Sundowns on day one of the Absa Premiership will be on their minds as the two sides lock horns this Sunday.

The last time Sundowns became MTN8 Cup champions was 12 years ago in 2007, while SuperSport lifted the trophy just two years ago.

But how did each side step into this battle? SuperSport had the tougher challenger against Bidvest Wits and did any SuperSport fans predict the 3 -0 win away at Bidvest Wits? Highly doubtful.

For Sundowns, the passage to this weekend’s game was made with a 3-1 come-from-behind win over Bloemfontein Celtic in Pretoria. It was an thrilling as Sundowns hitting the three goals in the final 14 minutes of the game.

But all quarter-final events are history now. All that matters is what the two sides will do this weekend on the grass.

Words from the camps

Sundowns captain Hlompho Kekana: "We know their strengths. We know Gabuza and Grobler are on top form at the moment. They are scoring goals."

"In our minds, we know very well what is expected from us. We know what we have to do in order to win the match on Sunday," Kekana said in this week’s press conference.

SuperSport coach Kaitano Tembo: "They (Sundowns) are a team that does not like defending."

"If we keep the ball for longer periods, then you force them to do what they really don't like to do (which is defending)," Tembo told journalists.
