Erling Braut Haaland scored a hatrick on his debut to lead Austrian Bundesliga Champions, Redbull Salzburg to an emphatic 6-2 win over KRC Genk in the opening match of their UEFA Champions League group stage campaign.
The Norwegian teenager did not waste any time in announcing his arrival in the UEFA Champions League as he opened the scores just two minutes into his debut, slotting home from close range after receiving a well-timed pass from Takumi Minamino.
The 19-year-old made it two-nil in the 34th minute after Hwang Hee-Chan did well to fight off a defender and set the ball into the path of Haaland. Haaland made it 4-1 in the 45th minute to complete his hatrick becoming the third-youngest player to do so and only the eighth debutant to manage the feat.
Lacumí Janer Bonilla pulled one back in the 40th minute to reduce the deficit while Mbwana Samatta scored in the 52nd minute to make it 5-2.
Hee-Chan Hwang, Andreas Ulmer, and Dominik Szoboszlai scored a goal each to complete what was a magical night for Salzburg at full to capacity Redbull Arena.
The win takes Salzburg to the summit of the Group E log. Defending Champions Liverpool suffered a shock 2-0 defeat away in Italy at the hands of Napoli.
