Mathare United end three-year record against Ulinzi Stars with a win

Mathare United overwrote a six-game winless run against Ulinzi Stars with a 2-1 win as all goals came in the second half in a Kenyan Premier League match staged at the Kenyatta Stadium, Machakos.

With the last three of their five meetings ending in draws, the first half showed little signs of the trend changing with a penalty shout four minutes from half-time when Oscar Wamalwa went down inside the penalty area following Harun Junior's pressure but Ulinzi's claims are waved away by the referee as half drew to a close with both teams locked at 0-0.

The Slum Boys returned to the closing half looking to make amends after their drub first half and broke the deadlock four minutes after the resumption of the second half when George Omondi put the ball in his own net after a mix up with Timothy Odhiambo who had come for the ball.

Benjamin Nyangweso's charges restored parity in the 73rd minute when former Mathare midfielder Elvis Nanwdwa was brought down in a promising position as Dan Waweru stepped up to take the free-kick, beating Job Ochieng in goal to bag his first goal of the season.

It was Mathare's turn to have their penalty shout rebuffed in the 81st minute after former Sofapaka midfielder, Kevin Kimani tried to round Timothy Odhiambo and went down but no penalty was awarded. The 2008 Kenyan Premier League champions restored their lead two minutes later when Cliff Alwanga nodded in Kevin Kimani's free-kick.

Mathare United next face Kariobangi Sharks in the Slum Derby on Saturday 28th September while Ulinzi Stars will host Sony Sugar at Afraha Stadium on the same day.
